Here is our list of raw data sources for Canada. It is by no means complete, but there are some very interesting things in here.

  • GeoBase is a federal, provincial and territorial government initiative that is overseen by the Canadian Council on Geomatics (CCOG). It is undertaken to ensure the provision of, and access to, a common, up-to-date and maintained base of quality geospatial data for all of Canada. Includes: administrative boundaries, digital elevation data, geodetic network, data alignment layer, geographical names, and national road network.
  • 2001 Census data. Some of this data costs money, but there are also quite a few extracts that are free to use. Research the data sources you find here before assuming they are free.
  • 2005 Road Network Files.
  • GeoGratis is a portal provided by the Earth Sciences Sector (ESS) of Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) which provides geospatial data at no cost via your Web browser.
